About the Vermont Mountaineers
The Mountaineers, defending champions of the New England Collegiate Baseball League for the second consecutive year in 2007, joined the NECBL in 2003.
This Montpelier-based collegiate baseball program and the Mountaineer organization have grown into one of the most popular summer events in central Vermont. A 42-game schedule affords fans 21 home games, featuring some of the best and most exciting collegiate baseball in the country.
The Mountaineer organization, described by NECBL officials as a “model team,” is led on the field by Manager John Russo, now entering his fifth year as our Field Manager. Like every successful program, there are myriads of essential activities that have to be accomplished in a timely, efficient and effective manner. That is the responsibility of our General Manager, Brian Gallagher and a hands-on Board of Directors.
In the past five years the Mountaineers have melded talent, desire and leadership into a championship organization. The Mountaineers got to the NECBL playoffs in their second year of competition, captured the 2005 Northern Division Championship in their third year, and for the past two years, the Mountaineers have been the reigning NECBL Champions.
The Mountaineers, averaging more than 1,600 fans over the past five summers at historic Montpelier Recreation Field, also have a substantial following of home-town fans when they play away games throughout New England.
The Mountaineer organization is also pleased to be a part of several improvements that have been and will continue to be made at storied Montpelier Recreation Field for the benefit of middle school and high school sports, as well as other organizations that use the field for their sporting events.
