Enriching the Lives of all VermontersVermont Humanities Council programs reach Vermonters of all ages and backgrounds. With our programs, Vermonters read for pleasure, explore humanities topics, and discuss and exchange ideas with others.
Humanities-based Literacy
Connections ~ At-risk students, teen parents, adult new readers, and corrections residents explore literature and the humanities. By opening books, they open doors to lifelong learning.
Never Too Early ~ Childcare providers and parents learn techniques to stimulate interest in books and stories in young children.
Ready Set Go! ~ This new initiative targets prospective kindergartners who are not ready for school and helps their parents prepare them for kindergarten.
At-risk Middle-school Students
Humanities Camps~ Weeklong theme-based day camps for at-risk middle school students help build positive peer groups, confidence, and a love of reading.
Grants to Communities
Creating Communities of Readers ~ With our support, Vermont communities develop and maintain intergenerational literacy activities and events - from authors-in-the-schools to new-baby bags and book festivals.
Humanities Grants ~ VHC grants fund humanities projects in museums and libraries, at film, music and literary festivals, and at local historical societies - including the Vermont History Expo.
Reading and Discussion
Literature and Medicine ~ Through this hospital-based program, healthcare professionals read and discuss literature, enriching their lives and the lives of patients.
Reading and Discussion ~ A nonprofit organization chooses from more than 60 theme-based series. The council provides books and a discussion leader. Participants make personal connections with neighbors, building stronger communities.
Vermont Reads ~ Celebrate reading and discussion with this statewide community one-book program.
Talks and Living History
Speakers Bureau ~ More than 70 speakers and living history impersonators are available for public events at schools, libraries, community centers, senior centers, and corrections facilities. ** New Catalog * *
First Wednesdays~ A monthly humanities forum in Middlebury, Montpelier and St. Johnsbury.
