INTRODUCTION
Vermont is well-known for its natural beauty, world-class recreation and for its exceptional quality products, from ice cream to granite monuments.

Central Vermont is at the heart of this wonderful state, but you may wonder what it’s like to live here. Read on.

For one, the diversity of our region allows you to choose a landscape that best suits you and your family. While some of the towns in this region are stereotypical Vermont, i.e. small, charming New England towns, Montpelier, Barre and Waterbury, for instance, offer the more urban lifestyle with its bustling downtowns, specialty shops, a mall and fine dining including Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Gourmet, & American cuisines.

In the "suburbs", you will find quiet villages that are only minutes away from the more urban areas, making shopping and work convenient.

For those who envision living in a log home tucked deep within the woods, there are some more rural areas on the outer edge of our region.

Whether you like city living, the suburbs or country living, Central Vermont has it all!

And did you know that the average commute in Vermont is only 15 minutes?

Secondly, our region is culturally diverse. While our communities still have pot luck suppers and church bazaars, there are also theatrical & musical productions, Vermont Symphony Orchestra performances, car racing, nightclubs, and more! We have everything big cities offer, but without the hassles, headaches and expense!

FACT: Famous car racers, Ricky Craven, Kevin LaPage and Randy Lajoie began their careers at Thunder Road International Speedway in Barre.

Next are the people. Central Vermont is comprised of a balanced blend of white-collar and blue-collar people, all sharing the common characteristics of hard-working, warm and friendly.

We love living in Central Vermont because it’s peaceful, safe and clean with lots to do for both single people and families!

HOUSING MARKET

    Variety is the hallmark of the Central Vermont housing market. The full range of housing types exist, including large Victorian city homes, colonials, townhouses, condominiums, solar homes, ranches, capes, log homes, and farmhouses.

    The average price of a Central Vermont primary resident home sold in 2005 was $184,244.00 and $220,671.00 in Vermont. The median price of a primary resident home sold in 2005 was $164,000.00 and $185,000.00 for the state of Vermont.(2)

    Apartment rents vary depending on the number of bedrooms. The median gross rent for all units regardless of size, was $519.00/month in 2000. The median rent for a 1 bedroom unit in 2004 is $524.00/month, and $992.00 for a 4 bedroom unit.(2)

 

MEDICAL FACILITIES

    Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC), consisting of Central Vermont Hospital, Woodridge Nursing Home and Central Vermont Physician Practice Corporation, is centrally located in Berlin.

    Central Vermont Hospital is a 122-bed facility offering comprehensive in-patient and out-patient care services along with 24-hour emergency care with an active medical staff of 97. The hospital is also affiliated with two top New England hospitals, Fletcher-Allen Health Care and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The hospital recently expanded to accommodate offices for physicians and health care professionals from these medical centers.

    Woodridge Nursing Home is a 153-bed facility located on the main campus of CVMC.

    Central Vermont Medical Center also sponsors community awareness events and educational workshops.

    In addition to Central Vermont Medical Center, there are several private medical practices, additional nursing homes, independent living apartment buildings for the elderly or handicapped, and Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice.

    FACT: Vermont is eighth in the nation for the number of doctors per every 100,000 people(1).





    DAYCARES & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Another nice aspect of our region is that there are many small, state licensed daycares with restrictions on number of children per adult, as well as stringent operational guidelines. This gives our young children the one-on-one attention they need to thrive and us peace of mind knowing our children will be safe.

Daycare costs vary depending on the provider. In this region, one week of daycare per child in a home environment typically costs between $80.00 - $200.00. For more than one child per family at the same daycare, providers typically give families a price break.




RECREATION & SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

    While Vermont is best-known for its world-class outdoor activities, there are many activities for those not-so-athletic individuals, as well. For those indoor or not-so-athletic type of individuals, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra performs regularly throughout the state. And, again, there are many theatrical and musical productions performed throughout the region at such venues as the Barre Opera House and the Valley Players Theatre. Car racing enthusiasts can enjoy races at Thunder Road International Speedbowl, dinner theatre, bowling, the movies, art galleries, craft fairs and museums. In addition, there are a wide variety of social organizations such as the V.F.W., the Elks Club, the Canadian Club, to name a few, and community activities to keep everyone busy!

    Outdoor activities in Central Vermont, of course, include skiing, ice skating, camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, and horseback riding. Bicycling, polo and tennis are also popular sports. And did you know that there are two newly constructed, world-class golf-courses? The Country Club of Vermont, located in Waterbury, is currently a private course. Barre, Montpelier and Northfield also have golf courses.
